GIS/RS

GIS and Computer Section of the Pakistan Forest Institute (PFI) is the most recent development to meet the challenges of the new era of Information Technology in the country. This Brach was established in 1998 with the assistance of International Centre for Integrated Mountains Development (ICIMOD). Besides the necessary hardware and software basis training in the GIS and Remote Sensing fields was also arranged by the ICIMOD for the PFI officers and staff.:

A mega project funded by Government of Pakistan worth of Rs.193.5 million have been launched at PFI since July, 2003, GIS & Remote Sensing being an active sub-Project of this mega project GIS & Computer Branch has to perform the following::

  • Set up of GIS & Compute Labs equipment with latest Hardware & Software for the Research and Training in the field GIS & RS.
  • Estimation of Forest cover of Pakistan using satellite imageries and preparing a forest Atlas of Pakistan.
  • Development of Forestry digital data base of all the Provinces including AJK & Northern Areas.
  • Capacity Building of PFI officers & staff in the field of GIS & Remote Sensing upto Ph.D. & MS level.
  • GIS & RS Training for the forestry graduate and on job forest officers of provincial forest department.
